Seawall Picnic Area Details

This natural seawall is a testament to the power of the ocean: many of the boulders you see here were thrown onto the land by the sea. Unlike Acadia's granite mountains, the bedrock here is volcanic in nature, a mix of fine ash and rock fragments formed more than 400 million years ago. Away from the coast here you'll see peatland, the southernmost ecosystem of its kind and home to a variety of rare and endangered plants. Look seaward to the east to spy Little Cranberry Island; Little and Great Duck Islands are to the south, and Great Gott Island is to the west. The slope to the beach is gentle, but be careful walking along the shore at low tide when exposed sections of rockweed can be slippery.
