San Joaquin Valley (B9) Details

The San Joaquin Valley extends from the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta in the north to the Tehachapi Mountains in the south and is named after the San Joaquin River, which has its origins just south of Yosemite National Park. The name of the river dates back to between 1805 and 1808, when Spanish explorer Gabriel Moraga was surveying east from Mission San José in order to find potential mission sites. Moraga happened upon a tributary of the river and named it for Saint Joachim, husband of Saint Anne and father of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Roadside marker: B9
