Meadow Succession (V2) Details
After the glaciers retreated, Yosemite Valley was filled by the ancient Lake Yosemite. Over time, silt and sand accumulated and the lake was transformed into great meadows. As the Native American tribes settled in the valley, they kept the meadows open for hunting by setting fires to clear brush. When the native population left the valley, the meadows began to disappear. Meadows such as this one are reminders of the much larger ones that once existed in the valley. Roadside marker: V2
