Coulterville Road (W4) Details

The road was built in 1874. For 23 years prior to its construction, the only access to the valley was by horse, mule, or foot down precipitous trails. The stagecoach provided travelers some degree of comfort and peace of mind and signaled a new era in the history of Yosemite Valley tourism. While surveying the road, one of Yosemite's three groves of giant sequoias was discovered (Merced Grove of Giant Sequoia). The road was used up until 1982, when it was closed permanently by a rockslide. Roadside marker: W4
