Based in Groveland, the Hetch Hetchy Railroad (HHRR) operated from 1917 to 1949. It carried workers, construction materials, freight, mail, and even excursion passengers, from Hetch Hetchy Junction over the 5,064-foot Poopenaut Pass, to the rim of the Hetch Hetchy Valley near the dam construction site. The train moved at under 8 miles per hour due to steep grades, sharp curves, and heavy loads. Once the railroad had outlived its usefulness, the entire line was dismantled, although several roads utilize portions of the former right of way, including State Highway 120.
