Located in the valley of the Illinois River, the 24,804-acre refuge has a system of ditches that bring water into wetlands and fill waterfowl brood ponds. Wilson's phalarope, American avocet, willet, sandpipers, greater yellowlegs, and dowitchers can be seen frequently during a 6-mile self-guided auto tour and half-mile interpretive Moose-Goose Nature Trail.
