Pipe Spring National Monument Details
For thousands of years, ancestral Puebloan people and Kaibab Paiute Indians raised crops near these three desert springs in northwestern Arizona, a rare dependable source of fresh water. Named by Mormon pioneers in 1858, Pipe Spring became a flash point for conflict between native tribes and ranchers with their thirsty herds of cattle -- so much so that in 1872 a fort called Winsor Castle was built around the spring for protection. Later purchased by Brigham Young, the fort and spring played an important role in early Mormon history. The park is located in the middle of the Kaibab Paiute Indian Reservation, and a visitor center serves both the park and the reservation, with programs focusing on local culture. Guided tours of the fort are available along with self-guided tours of traditional gardens, orchards, ranch buildings, and a short walking trail.
