Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument Details
While it's true that the Grand Canyon forms the southern edge of the million-acre Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, don't let the name fool you into thinking of this park as some sort of 'Grand Canyon Lite.' In sharp contrast to its namesake National Park, Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument is one of the least visited, most remote places in the continental U.S. -- a rugged land of canyons, cactus, cattle corrals and cowboys. Located in northwest Arizona, the park has no paved roads and no visitor center, and an area larger than the state of Rhode Island. The only way to get around is in a high-clearance four-wheel drive vehicle. Camping, hiking and backpacking are the only real activities: visitors can camp alongside the dirt roads and follow a pair of semi-maintained hiking trails or set out on their own path. A drive into the park also will be rewarded by dark skies and remarkable stargazing.
