The Merced National Wildlife Refuge was set up to bring in wintering waterfowl from nearby farmland to cease crop damage. The 10,262-acre refuge boasts the largest wintering populations of Ross's geese and lesser sandhill cranes within the Pacific Flyway. The landscape is built of wetlands, native grasslands, vernal pools, and riparian areas. An auto-tour route and three nature trails offer year-round opportunities to view goldfields, purple owl's clover, grazing livestock, burrowing owls, beaver, long-tailed weasels, and various other wildlife.
