Manzanar National Historic Site Details
The United States had its own "concentration camps" during World War II: more than 110,000 Japanese Americans were imprisoned during a frenzy of fear about infiltration and espionage on the West Coast. Of the 10 camps built, the Manzanar facility in California's Owen Valley is the best known, and the Manzanar National Historic Site preserves the camp site and tells the story of the controversial wartime internment program. Established in 1942, the camp came to house more than 10,000 people during the war; visitors can watch a film and see exhibits about conditions in the camp and take part in discussions about civil rights and democracy. Reconstructed barracks and mess hall can be toured, and rangers regularly lead outdoor tours as well. A 3.2-mile auto tour road leads to a memorial, the camp cemetery, the remains of rock gardens and camp buildings, and still-productive orchards.
