General Sherman Details
The General Sherman Tree is a giant sequoia tree located in the Giant Forest of Sequoia National Park. By volume, it is the largest known living single-stem tree on Earth and is estimated to be around 2,300 to 2,700 years old. The tree is allegedly named after the Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman by James Wolverton in 1879. Wolverton was a naturalist who served as a lieutenant under General Sherman. The trail to the General Sherman Tree provides a better opportunity to see and appreciate the tree and its setting than was previously available from the older, more crowded parking lot and short trail.
