Devils Postpile National Monument Details

Some of the earth's most dynamic forces worked together to create the Devil's Postpile in eastern California. First, a volcanic eruption filled a basaltic lava lake up to 400 feet deep, which formed columnar cracks as it cooled. Later, glaciers chipped away at the old lava lake, exposing the symmetrical formation that resembles a stacked pile of log posts up to 60 feet high. Devil's Postpile National Monument is located adjacent to Mammoth Mountain ski resort, which has a shuttle for park visitors; upon disembarking, it is just a short walk to the signature formation. The shuttle also drops hikers off at the 1.3-mile trail leading to 101-foot Rainbow Falls, and two legendary long trails -- the John Muir and the Pacific Crest -- also cross the park.
