Yosemite National Park Details
Plunging waterfalls, tall trees, and the stark majesty of El Capitan define Yosemite, a 1,200-square-mile park that stretches far beyond the valley that bears its name. Four million people visit Yosemite each year, with the vast majority limiting their time in the park to the seven-mile-long Yosemite Valley. Here you'll find the world's largest granite monolith, El Capitan, as well as 2,424-foot Yosemite Falls, the tallest waterfall in North America (but only in springtime, since it's fed exclusively by snowmelt). The 620-foot Bridal Veil Falls, arguably more beautiful, has the added attraction of plunging year-round. Also within the park but outside the Yosemite Valley is the Badger Pass Ski Area, the Pioneer Yosemite History Center with its costumed interpretive guides, and the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias, where the 2,700-year-old "Grizzly Giant" tree stands amid 500 of its fellows. A former wagon trail, the Tioga Road, allows visitors to tour the park's higher elevations, with recommended stops at the Olmsted Point overlook and Tenaya Lake. Established: October 1, 1890 Area: 761,266.19 acres
