This 12-mile strip of freeway running from the Oakland hills to the entrance of the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge was a masterpiece of its time. When it was built in 1966, it won first prize at the United States Department of Transportations Second Annual Highway Beauty Awards Competition. While you can not expect the most scenic of views along the freeway, there are some pretty sights including Lake Merritt, Mills College, and the 40-foot pines lining the shoulders.
