Route 50--El Dorado County Details

This historic route was used by Gold Rush miners and Pony Express messengers, making it one of the most historic routes in the state. Parts of the road even later became part of Californias first state highway, and the eastern route is part of the State Scenic Highway System. The most beautiful section leads from the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range and travels through the American River Canyon and to the peak of Echo Summit. As it descends down the foothill of the mountain, it arrives on the southern end of Lake Tahoe, where you can enjoy jaw-dropping views of this water.
