The Pool Details
Originally called "Funston Pool" after Fredrick Funston, who supposedly caught 312 trout from the pool in one day sometime during the late 1880s, this turbulent water pocket in the Big Thompson River has since become a popular Rocky Mountain National Park destination. Of course today there are limits on the number of trout an angler can possess. The trail to The Pool is a wide, sandy path the experiences very little elevation change as it follows the river past the massive boulders of Arch Rocks and the shady, damp scenery studded with aspen and signs of beaver activity. While the trail does offer some excellent views of Stones Peak, the main attraction is definitely the big, sunny, exposed rocks surrounding that pool that are popular among anglers, hikers, and a number of species of waterfowl.
