Blocked by the Friant Dam on the San Joaquin River, this 1,675-square mile lake is completely man-made. And while it is still mainly used for flood control, it is also a popular place for locals and visitors to go swimming, boating, and waterskiing in the warmer months. The lake and surrounding recreation area encompass over 40 miles of shoreline. The surrounding hills and parks are also used for hiking. Many unique species of wildlife can also be found here. Throughout the year, deer, badgers, and cottontail rabbits are common, while winter is the perfect time to spot bald eagles.
