Burton Island State Park Details
This state park is only accessible by boat, making it one of Vermonts more remote destinations. Departing from Kamp Kill Kare State Park, you will make the journey across the waters of Lake Champlain to this 253-acre island where you can spend the day hiking, swimming, or canoeing. The island was originally all farmland in the 1800s and 1900s. In fact, agricultural memorabilia like fences, farm tools, and even an old bar are still located inside the park. However, it was turned over to the state and opened as a state park in 1964. Despite its remoteness, the park has many modern facilities, including a 100-slip marina, a museum, and a small cafe and bistro. Although it is possible to visit on a day trip, you can also spend the night at one of the campsites, lean-tos, or cabins.
