The Basin

This 30-foot wide pothole at the base of a small waterfall may look like a whirlpool jacuzzi, although the waters flowing into it from the Pemigewasset River are a little too cold for a relaxing dip.

The Basin Details

This 30-foot wide pothole at the base of a small waterfall may look like a whirlpool jacuzzi, although the waters flowing into it from the Pemigewasset River are a little too cold for a relaxing dip. This unique rock formation has attracted visitors for almost two centuries. Even poet Henry David Thoreau called it perhaps the most remarkable curiosity of its kind in New England. However, you should go and judge for yourself it is only a short 10-minute walk from the Styles Bridge Highway.
