New Echota Details
This preserved state park was once the capital of the Cherokee Nation, with a two-story council house, a newspaper print shop, and several homes and cabins that were used during the meetings. However, the town was only active for a couple of years until the congressional act of 1832 that gave Cherokee land to European-American settlers. Once the tribes were forced out, the town remained abandoned for over 100 years until the state reconstructed it as a park. The buildings and home were rebuilt and opened to the public as a museum, nature trail, and research center.
