Stone Mountain Details

At first glance, you might think this peak is just like any other mountain in the Blue Ridge or Appalachian Mountain Range. But a closer look, you will see that it is actually a massive, exposed piece of quartz monzonite and granite! With a base circumference of roughly 5-miles, the peak stands 1,686-feet above sea level (although it continues underground for another 9 miles). At the top of the mountain is a confederate memorial with a carving of Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson. Although the carving has been at the center of much controversy over the years, it is still an interesting site for those who want to see the largest bas-relief carving in the world.
