This 946-acre island on the Mississippi River is the largest government-owned weapons manufacturing arsenal in the country, producing military-grade tanks, grenade launchers, and artillery for over 140 years. It is also the site of the First Army headquarters and the center of the US Army’s Center of Excellence for Additive Manufacturing. During your stopover on the island, it is worth visiting the Rock Island Arsenal Museum. It is the countries second oldest military museum, and contains thousands of firearms and military equipment that was either produced on-site or imported from abroad.
