Kincaid Mounds Site Details
Covering over 105 acres of southern Illinois, this ancient site was once home to Mississippian culture tribes that lived in the area between 1,000 and 700 years ago. There are 11 raised flat-topped mounds in the area, many of which were used as homes, ceremonial builds, and temples. In addition to unearthing this important time point in history, this site has also become famous for its archeological excavation techniques. The methods used by the University of Chicago archeological team to dig up the mounds in the 1930s and 1940s were some of the first instances of modern excavation practices that are still used today.
