Considered to be an architectural and engineering achievement, this historic lighthouse has been guarding the Chicago Harbor for over 100 years. Its 111-foot tall cast-iron structure and the offshore location at the mouth of the Chicago River continue to be an amazing feat even by today is standards. It is still in operation, so, unfortunately, it is not open to the public for tours or visits. But as one of the only two lighthouses in Illinois, it is still a worthy landmark that deserves to be protected and cherished.
