A designated National Natural Landmark, this serene pond is a critical habitat for many native birds and animals. Barred owls, red-shouldered hawks, and parula warblers can be seen flying through the cypress treetops, while bobcats, otters, and rabbits lurk along the steep cliffs of the floodplains. Because of its size, it is one of the more important water tupelo and wetland areas not just in the Cache River basin, but in the entire state. It is located within the 1,861-acre Little Black Slough the largest natural area in Illinois.
