This nature reserve near the northern border of Illinois is the last remaining quaking bog in the entire state. Surrounded by damp meadows and wetland marshes, this 47.5-acre bog was once threatened, and many conservationists feared it would dry up and not survive much longer. However, the land was handed over to the Illinois Department of Natural Resource in order to help restore and protect this slowly-dissipating natural wonder. Since then, the state has purchased additional land around the bog in order to monitor the sensitive environment. At the moment, it remains in relatively decent shape. There is an elevated boardwalk and viewing area where you can see the flourishing ecosystem of the bog yourself during your visit.
