The Illinois section of the country is the first transcontinental highway may only be 178 miles out of the entire 3,142-mile journey; however, it is packed with tons of beautiful sights, historic attractions, and charming riverfront villages. In fact, it is the only part of the entire highway that is a designed National Scenic Byway. Coming in from Indianapolis, you will first encounter the bustling towns of Frankfort and Joliet, before heading north to visit Aurora, Batavia, and Geneva. From there, you will be a beeline west as you parallel I-88 a few more century-old small-towns including DeKalb, Rochelle, and Franklin Grove.
