Historic National Road

Take a drive-through history as you travel along the first federally-funded road in the entire country. Starting in Marshall, you will travel for 164 miles southwest right into the heart of East St. Louis, where you will get a taste of small-town America. The quirky town of Casey is known for its roadside attractions, like the world is largest knitting needle, pitchfork, windchimes, and mailbox. You can also see where Abraham Lincoln made his first political protest (Vandalia) the largest prehistoric settlement in North America (Cahokia Mounds), and a 198-foot cross that can be seen for miles around (Effingham).
