Argo Gold Mill and Tunnel Details
Another historic landmark that sheds light on Colorados mining culture is this 120-year-old mill and tunnel. It was built to mine and transport gold from multiple towns, including Russel Gulch, Quartz Hill, Central City, and Nevadaville, and stayed in operation until 1943 when the US suspended mining operations during WWII. It was such a success for its time, collecting almost $100 million worth of gold. In todays money, that is an astounding $1 trillion! After it closed, the mill was turned into a tourist attraction and museum, giving visitors the opportunity to descend into the tunnel and even pan for gold.
