Lightning

Lightning is an ever-present danger on the barren hillsides, tundra, and treeless summits found in Rocky Mountain National Park. Try to be aware of weather changes, and try to get below the treeline or to a shelter before the storm strikes. Stay away from summits and isolated trees and rocks, even if it is the only shelter above the treeline. Find shelter as quickly as possible, or crouch down on your heels in a tight ball. Do not lie on the ground. Start hikes, especially longer hikes, early, and be aware that storms often occur during the late afternoon. Always check weather forecasts for predicted storms.
