Dinosaur National Monument Details
Located, appropriately enough, near Dinosaur, Colo., Dinosaur National Monument sits astride the Colorado-Utah border and contains one of the world's greatest troves of dinosaur fossils. The Quarry Visitor Center includes a complete allosaurus skeleton, and that's just an introduction to this park's wonders. The 1.5-mile Fossil Discovery Hike features the archaeological dig of the imagination: a wall of Douglas Quarry embedded with more than 1,500 dinosaur fossils. In addition to allosaurus, the Quarry Exhibit Hall contains the fossilized bones of other famous dinosaurs, like apatosaurus and stegosaurus. At 210,844 acres, this big park has much to offer visitors in addition to old bones, including petroglyphs left by people of the Fremont culture and the active outdoor adventure of whitewater rafting on the Green and Yampa Rivers, the latter of which can be accessed via the separate Canyon Area Visitor Center.
