Wheeler Geologic Area Details

Colorados first national monument is an alien-like landscape of rocky spires and eroded fairy chimneys with a history that dates back over 25 million years. These unusual rock formations were created over the span of 2 million years after an erupting volcano covered the land in thick fogs of ash. The rocky outcroppings are amazing to see in person, although interested travelers will need to embark on a pretty elaborate journey to get there. The park can only be reached by a 16-mile overnight hike or a 14-mile off-roading drive with a high-clearance AWD vehicle.
