Shielding the Arkansas River with its massive 1,250-foot walls is one of the deepest canyons in the state. Although it is relatively narrow (only 50-feet in some parts) and not extremely long (6-miles), it is still a mesmerizing natural wonder near Cañon City. One of the best views over the gorge is from the Royal Gorge Bridge, which was once the highest suspension bridge on the planet. You can cross the 1,270-footpath from both sides of the granite walls (as long as you are not afraid of heights, of course!). Other fun activities to do at the gorge include white water rafting, sky diving, and zip-lining. Less adventurous travelers can also take the scenic train ride that chugs along the base of the canyon.
