Designated a National Scenic Trail in the late 1970s, this roughly 10-mile hike has 2 trailheads, one across from Island Lake, and the other beside Eggleston Lake in Grand Mesa. Starting at the Eggleston Lake trailhead, there is parking in an unpaved section by the lake. Hikers will want to stay right at the first junction, and will then travel switchbacks, get views of Butts Lake, and at times walk along extremely thin sections of the trail, with very steep drop-offs. Afternoon thunderstorms are common here, so getting out early and completing the crest portion in the a.m. has its benefits.
