Open to dogs and horseback riding, the Columbine Lake trail offers an idyllic alpine lake at the end of a relatively short and moderately difficult trail. The trail starts out with switchbacks and climbs 1,000 feet quickly before becoming less strenuous. In the first clearing, Ohio Peak and Anvil Mountain come into focus. The last mile or so before the lake is relatively flat and allows visitors to coast to the shores. The beautiful blue and turquoise water of the lake is shocking and seems better suited for the Caribbean than 12,000 feet above sea level. If you pack in fishing gear, the lake has been rated as 'good' for brook trout.
