Start your drive in Grand Junction and head south until you reach the ruins of Driggs Mansion. From there, travel along the flat-topped Unaweep Canyons past the deteriorating Hanging and towards the city of Placerville. This entire region caters to outdoor enthusiasts, with plenty of hiking, rock climbing, wildlife viewing, and white water rafting opportunities. Because it would take almost a full day to make the entire journey, you are better off breaking the trip into smaller chunks and spending two or three days exploring the area.
