The Pawnee Buttes are soft, clay rock formations that rise 300-feet above the prairie grasslands, creating an awe-inspiringly backdrop as you drive approach them from afar. This area is also a stomping ground for coyotes, rattlesnakes, antelope, and several species of birds like falcons and eagles. From spring to early summer, the buttes are actually off-limits to hikers in order to protect these nesting birds.
