Salt River Canyon Details
Located in the Tonto National Forest, this hypnotic mix of jagged rocks, desert shrubs, and gushing rivers is one of the most underrated attractions in Arizona. You won’t find any official trails or paths, which means more adventurous travelers will enjoy the peace and solitude of venturing the canyon on their own. The central part of the canyon is bisected by the Salt River, which only flows from March to May before drying up in the arid desert heat. During this time, you will find white-water rafters and kayakers exploring the banks and leaping across the numerous rapids and side creeks. The foliage also tends to be lusher and greener, making this one of the best times to visit.
