This trail is not just known for its scenic views but also its tumultuous history during the early days of the Navajo-European contract. Many of the landmarks scattered throughout the 100-mile trail are a somber reminder of how many tribes were captured, murdered, or displaced. While it is hard to ignore the area's history, the road serves as an homage to the land, which is now mostly Navajo Nation.
