Salt Flats Details

Located in the midst of the barren desert landscape of western Texas is a dry salt pan from the Guadalupe Mountains. As a water basin in the center of the range dried up, it left behind mineral-rich salt deposits, unlike anything that had existed in the region. The salt was used by Native American tribes for preserving food and tanning hides, which attracted European settlers to the area, which resulted in a battle over who was entitled to the land. The tumultuous El Paso Salt Battle lasted for over 12 years and killed 20-30 men.
