Congress Avenue Bridge Bat Colony Details

Humans aren't the only species to live in downtown Austin! Crossing over Lady Bird Lake is the Congress Avenue Bridge, which is home to over 1 million Mexican free-tailed bats. This is the largest bat colony in the entire world, which is impressive considering it's only used as a nesting place for females and their pups. Throughout the summer and fall, you'll have a chance to see the bats as they fly from the bridge in search of food. There are very few bat sightings in winter, as many of them migrate down to Mexico for the warmer weather.
