This 697-mile driving mile loop takes you back to the day where frontiersmen and pioneers lived. You will get to drive through 150 years in history as you explore Republican-era forts, homes, and military bastions that played a vital role in Texas history. The U.S. Army built over 100 camps and 44 military posts between the years of 1848 and 1900. During your drive along this trail, you will stop by eight of these magnificent forts, including Fort Richardson, Fort Belknap, Fort Griffin, Fort Phantom Hill, Fort Chadbourne, Fort Concho, Fort McKavett, and Fort Mason. It is also worth stopping by the archeological site of the Presidio San Luis de las Amarillas, a Spanish mission that was built in 1757.
