Once developed by two Native American tribes, the Texas Point National Wildlife Refuge now works rigorously to protect the migratory birds along with the resident wildlife in the area. The 8,972 acres is majority wetlands with marshes and wooded areas. The woods provide a welcome sight to the birds after their migratory flight across the Gulf. The popular bird in the refuge is the Mottled Duck who likes the dry areas for nesting and the wetlands for their chicks. The refuge has a great pedestrian walk right through the marshes so visitors can see the nature up close.
