Amistad National Recreation Area Details
A dam on the Rio Grande River forms the Amistad Reservoir, the heart of the Amistad National Recreation Area. Located on the U.S.-Mexico border in south Texas, the 57,292-acre park is known as a watery oasis in the middle of the Chihuahuan Desert; popular activities include boating, fishing, waterskiing, scuba diving, camping, bird-watching, and seeing ancient Indian pictographs -- some only viewable by boat. At least 25,000 acres of the park is covered by water; the park's name, which means "peace," is a nod to the joint U.S. and Mexican initiative to create the reservoir in 1969.
