Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument Details
Flint was a valuable natural resource for Native American tribes, which used the stone to make arrowheads and tools. The Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument in the Texas Panhandle preserves a quarry near the Canadian River where flint was mined for more than 13,000 years, up until the 19th century. So treasured was the distinctive Alibates flint that it showed up in spears and arrowheads throughout the Great Plains; so ancient is its use that examples date to the age of the mammoth. The park contains 700 quarries, many located atop a mesa. Rangers lead visitors on a steep one-mile, two-hour walk to the flint pits. There is also a short nature trail at the visitor center and occasional flint-knapping demonstrations.
