The Lone Star Hiking Trail weaves through the forest and is nearly 130 miles from start to end. Deer hunting season is in November and December, but visitors can fish year-round. There are recreation areas throughout the forest, a few well-maintained campgrounds, and visitors can rent paddleboats and canoes at the Double Lake Recreation Area.
