The Sabine National Forest in eastern Texas is just over 160,000 acres in size, but don't let its smaller stature fool you--there are excellent opportunities to get outside and get active here. Some of the more popular water activities are boating and fishing, while the land-based activities include hiking, riding off-road vehicles, camping, and having a relaxing picnic. The Indian Mounds Wilderness Area allows for hunting and horseback riding but prohibits mechanical transport and motorized vehicles and machinery of any kind. The Red Hills Lake Recreation Area is home to a 19-acre, calm lake that is prime real estate for camping and fishing.
