Abilene State Park Details
Long before this was a park, the Comanche Native Americans frequented this area to camp and hunt buffalo amongst the native pecan trees, which now offer shade for picnicking. This 539-acre park is located in the semi-arid prairie grass region of the Callahan Divide hills in North Central Texas. The park provides numerous recreational opportunities including a lake and fishing pond, a historic swimming pool, trails, and camping. The swimming pool, as well as the stone water tower, was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps over 80 years ago and has been the focus of the park ever since. The Abilene Dam Road is a 3.5-mile scenic loop trail overlooking Lake Abilene and Elm Creek Valley is popular for biking and walking. Visitors interested in wildlife viewing, the park has white-tailed deer, raccoons, armadillos, foxes, squirrels, and cottontail rabbits. For birders, the park is home to the Mississippi kite, greater roadrunner, Northern cardinal, hummingbird, mockingbird. Be sure to check out the bird viewing blind.
