Located in Penobscot County, Maine, Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge consists of 11,435 acres of peat bog and wetlands deemed both unusually rare and ecologically important. The peatland contains several raised bogs separated by a network of streamside meadows, while the six tributaries of Sunkhaze Stream create a wetland community supporting numerous varieties of wildlife. Seven birds, two mollusks, and three plants listed as endangered or threatened are present on the refuge. Hunting and fishing are allowed on the refuge with proper licenses, and with 10 miles of hiking trails, birding and wildlife photography are also very popular.
