As one of the northernmost points on the Atlantic flyway, Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge is a pivotal nesting and feeding point for shorebirds, waterfowl, birds of prey, and game birds. Composed of 28,751 acres, the refuge has a varied landscape supporting numerous forms of wildlife and a hardwood forest consisting of maple, fir, aspen, spruce, and birch trees. Moose, bears, woodcock, and grouse can often be found in and around these hardwood forests. Hiking and birding are very popular activities on the refuge, and hunting and fishing are allowed with proper permits and some seasonal restrictions. Combustion engine vehicles and mechanical transports, such as bicycles, are not allowed on the refuge in the designated federal wilderness areas.
